Cotto vs. Canelo possible for June 6th or 13th in New York

canelo63By Dan Ambrose: The mega-fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and former WBA/WBC 154lb champ Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) could be taking place on June 6th or 13th in New York rather than on May 2nd like the 24-year-old Canelo wants.

Cotto’s legal adviser Gabriel Peñagarícano told ESPN.com.ar that the Cotto-Canelo fight would wind up in New York in June. Having the fight take place in April, the Cotto vs. Canelo fight would be able to beat the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight.

Boxing fans might not be too happy to see their monthly cable bills take a back to back hit in consecutive months with high bills due to the pay-per-view fights.

Cotto appears to be the one calling the shots in the negotiations, and if Canelo wants the fight, he’s going to need to bend to the Puerto Rican fighter’s wishes for the purse split, date and venue. Having the fight take place on the same weekend as the Puerto Rican day parade on June 13th would be a huge plus for Cotto if the fight gets staged in New York.

It would mean that many of the fans would be Cotto fans, especially with the fight taking place in New York. On the flipside, if the fight were staged in Las Vegas, Nevada or Texas, it would mean that many of the fans would be for Canelo. Cotto would be making a wise decision to steer Canelo off the May 2nd date he’s been stubbornly pushing for and instead stage it in New York on June 13th.

“We are working with people who are friends of ours. But we’re talking about all aspects of the fight, including the financial structure. We are at 60 percent now. A little more than before because Golden Boy and ‘Canelo’ is been more flexible to move toward our position, ” Peñagarícano said via ESPNDeportes.com. “Miguel is that who will decide whether to fight or before Saturday, 6 or 13 of June.”

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight still isn’t a done deal, though, and it’s quite possible that if it doesn’t get made, Mayweather will look to step in and snatch Cotto away for a fight against him. Canelo would then have to wait his turn until Cotto’s free from the Mayweather fight before he’d get a shot at him. Canelo still doesn’t have the cache to compete with Mayweather for the big names, so he’ll have to sit on the sidelines until Cotto is free.
