Cotto cannot escape Golovkin much longer

cotto900By B.G.B: With the super-mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao nearing closer and closer to confirmation and the news that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will face James Kirkland, it would seem that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has been handed the short stick. It would be a total failure for boxing if he was to face Mayweather on May 2nd to prevent the mega-fight from happening but the good news is that scenario now seems increasingly less likely.

Team Cotto will or should be kicking themselves that they didn’t snatch at the opportunity to face Canelo rather than sit and wait for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight to again falter at the last stage.

So with Mayweather, Alvarez and even Kirkland out of the question for Cotto’s next fight, one man now has a glorious opportunity to trap Cotto into a corner he cannot escape. He’s one win away from the big time and you can bet he’s going straight to the top after that win. That man is of course WBA middleweight and current WBC interim champion Gennady Golovkin.

Not only is Golovkin a middleweight world champion but he’s the mandatory for Cotto’s WBC world title. Now that Alvarez has moved on as well as Mayweather (it would seem certain that he has done) Cotto must make a statement of his own.

Taking a light touch to build up a fight with Alvarez for September is of course an option but one that will not be popular amongst boxing fans that are desperate to see somebody of world class status take on the wrecking ball of the middleweight division. He’s been making a lot of noise but now finally Golovkin has had a touch of luck on his side.

Right now you can bet that Cotto is crossing his fingers praying for a Martin Murray upset that would shock the boxing world but is that going to happen? Martin Murray is an excellent fighter but his style is simply all wrong for GGG. It’s likely to end in a stoppage win for Golovkin and Cotto will have nowhere to turn.

Why Cotto, a 160 pound world champion, is reluctant to step in the ring with another middleweight champion at a time where his rival Alvarez has taken an all action fight is only explained through fear. The only reason Cotto would not take this fight is fear and it’s as simple as that. I’m sure the worn out excuses of ‘Golovkin isn’t PPV’ or ‘Golovkin is not popular enough’ will be used by both Cotto and Roach but those excuses are now lies. Golovkin is very popular with boxing fans and a Cotto-Golovkin fight would definitely be a PPV fight. I’m optimistic enough (mainly thanks to Golovkin) to suggest that not only would this fight be a PPV worthy fight but it would be a PPV smash hit. The money would be good and Cotto would likely be the A-side in negotiations. If it’s money he’s after then he is in a position where he can make demands that Golovkin would likely expect. Golovkin wants to fight, money will come later. Can the same be said about Cotto? I don’t think so.

Financially it makes sense. Competitively the fight makes sense. A fight between Cotto and Golovkin literally ticks every box considering that both Alvarez and Mayweather fights are out of the question. All Golovkin has to do is overcome Martin Murray in February and all signs will point to this fight. The only thing stopping the fight is Cotto himself. Will he step up and face Golovkin in what would be a powerhouse middleweight fight? Or will he take a tune-up and hope that Alvarez beats Kirkland? Or will he just sit and wait for Alvarez or Mayweather to come knocking? All things considered Golovkin is definitely the best direction Cotto could go in if he is willing to try and send a message to the boxing world. One thing Cotto cannot do is ignore Golovkin any longer and offer the same pathetic excuses as others have done. Golovkin is creeping up on Cotto, one more win and he’ll have him cornered.
