Chavez Jr sees Froch and Golovkin fights possible for 2015

chavez012By Dan Ambrose: Despite being in limbo due to promotional problems with Top Rank, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) believes he’s not only going to fight IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch this year but also Gennady Golovkin.

Chavez Jr wants both fights. His promoter Bob Arum though says that the Froch fight won’t happen. Arum is happy to make the fight but it would be under Top Rank, and that’s something that Chavez Jr may or may not be willing to do.

This could wind up in court with Chavez Jr having to work it out in the legal system to see if he still has one fight left on his contract with Top Rank or not.
“I see this fights for me this coming year Chávez vs Froch and Chávez vs GGG,” Chavez Jr said on his Twitter.

Even if Chavez Jr is able to get out of his contract with Top Rank, it’s highly unlikely that he’d be able to negotiate fights with both Froch and Golovkin. Chavez Jr’s negotiations would Golovkin previously went at a snail’s pace and it’s hard to imagine that Chavez Jr would be able to put together two fights against Golovkin and Froch in 2015. Further, if Chavez Jr gets beaten by Froch then a fight against Golovkin makes zero sense.

It wouldn’t be a big fight, and it’s doubtful that the boxing public would be interested in seeing a defeated Chavez Jr get into the ring with Golovkin in his next fight.

Chavez Jr needs a tune-up bout, because he’s not fought since May of 2013 when he defeated Brian Vera. A nice stay busy fight against a fringe contender would be the perfect situation for the soon to be 29-year-old Chavez Jr. He can’t afford to jump into the ring after a year’s layoff against someone like Froch.

Chavez Jr has fought only twice in the past three years, so it’s not as if he’s been a busy fighter during the last several years. He probably will still have a ton of rust on him even if he were to take a tune-up fight.

Chavez Jr needs a number of tune-ups to get back to where he was before when he blew out Andy Lee in 2012 and beat Marco Antonio Rubio. The Rubio fight was a competitive one for Chavez Jr, and nothing like the way that Golovkin destroyed Rubio recently. Chavez Jr doesn’t have the same kind of explosive power that Golovkin possesses to make his fights easy for him.
