Can Roy Jones Jr still win a world title?

By Gav Duthie: WBO Cruiserweight champion Marco Huck 38-2-1 (26) is firmly in the sights of 46 year old ex 4-weight world champion Roy Jones Jnr 59-8 (42). A fight like this at the latter stages of Roy’s career may seem far fetched but I have a feeling that it is entirely possible. If Huck defends his title once more then he becomes the most successful Cruiserweight champion in history.

Considering the fact that he was seriously linked with fighting equal record holder Johnny Nelson (who hasn’t fought in 10 years) I would consider Jones Jnr a big step up and much more feasible opponent. Roy is still a huge name in boxing and Huck is understandably looking for a showpiece event for the record breaking defence and a fight that he should comfortably win. Theoretically Roy ticks both boxes. Is there any chance that Roy could upset the odds and win?

The Current Roy Jones

Roy has won world titles in all divisions from middleweight-heavyweight with the exception of the Cruiserweight division. He has been boxing there for a number of years now with mixed success. He is on a 5 fight winning streak and hasn’t lost since 2011. Although his opponents haven’t been at world level they have been decent and he has strolled past most of them. Jones is also well traveled in his last few years with his last two fights being in Russia and Latvia. This would make fighting in Germany less of a problem than it would have been in his prime. Gone are the days when Roy was a Las Vegas headliner when he understandably refused to go to Germany to fight Darisz Michalzewski for fear of corrupted scoring. Roy has stated that he still has the desire to win a world title.

Can Jones Jr win?

The cruiserweight division is currently full of top young eastern Europeans at present and the lest time Roy fought at world level he was stopped by Denis Lebedev in 10 rounds. When I recently watched former Cruiserweight star Juan Carlos Gomez get destroyed by Russian prospect Dmitry Kudryashov in less than one minute I thought this is no division for the old timers. I feel the same with Roy Jones. I see Marco Huck as a very dangerous boxer who not unforgettably gave Alexander Povetkin his toughest ever fight bar Klitschko in his one fight at heavyweight. It would be an amazing and well deserved fairytale story if Jones were to triumph but I don’t think its remotely possible he can pull it off.
