Arum: Pacquiao will KO Mayweather

pac#5 - CopyBy Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr is running scared of his fighter Manny Pacquiao because of his combination of southpaw stance and his power.

Arum believes that Mayweather is hesitating in signing the contract for a fight against the 36-year-old Filipino because of the threat that he could lose for the first time if the fight gets made.

“The other guy [Mayweather] I’m not sure of, because I’ve always had doubts that he wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao,” Arum said via esnewsreporting.com. “Mayweather is one of the best defensive fighters of all time. He has problems with fast southpaws who can punch. We’ll get another opponent, but we’ll not discuss any of that until after January 31st. [Al] Haymon is on board. [Amir] Khan is on board. We’re just waiting on hamlet. I think not only does he [Pacquiao] win, he also stops Mayweather. I think they [boxing fans] should bombard the internet, saying ‘Floyd, sign the damn contract!’”

Arum is dreaming if he thinks that Pacquiao is going to be able to score a knockout against a defensive artist like Mayweather. Let’s look at the facts; Pacquiao hasn’t scored a knockout in six years since 2009, and that was a very, very controversial knockout of Miguel Cotto where the referee halted the fight in the last seconds with Cotto still fighting back and on his feet. Since then, Pacquiao hasn’t scored a knockout or even come close to knocking anyone out. The power seems to have disappeared for the 36-year-old Pacquiao since his win over Cotto. I don’t know why, but Pacquiao’s power has abandoned him ever since that fight.

The only guys that Pacquiao has scored knockouts against in the past were stationary guys or fighters that came straight at him looking to slug it out like Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao doesn’t do well against fighters that move and fight defensively. That’s why it’s going to be next to impossible for him to even come close to getting a knockout against Mayweather. The thing is unless Pacquiao is able to knock Mayweather out, he’s not going to be able to out-box him, because Mayweather rarely loses rounds when he’s using his boxing skills.

Arum is already talking about another opponent for Pacquiao while reminding us about the January 31st deadline that Pacquiao has set. That deadline will very likely be the thing responsible for the fight not taking place, because B-side fighters can’t be telling the A-side that they have a deadline. It’s like someone applying for a job and telling their potential employer what to do.
