Khan says Mayweather won’t be seen as a legend if he fights Brook instead of him

khan67777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr won’t be seen as a legend of the sport after he retires if he chooses to fight IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook rather than himself for his next fight.

To Khan, Mayweather choosing Brook to fight would be a sign that he’s running from himself, even though Khan doesn’t hold down a title and is a mere contender with two defeats in his last six fights.

When asked what he’d think if Brook got the Mayweather fight instead of himself, Khan said to Fighthype.com “It shows Floyd’s on the run. If it happens, he will never be seen as a legend in the sport or he’ll never be seen like the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard… because obviously he’s avoiding a lot of big fighters.”

So in other words, if Mayweather elects not to fight Khan, who really hasn’t fought anyone that you can call a dangerous opponent since his loss to Danny Garcia, it means that Mayweather won’t be a legend? That is so incredibly funny.

It’s interesting how Khan sets himself up as the gatekeeper to Mayweather becoming a greatness. Since when did a fighter with a 4-2 record in his last six fights become a gatekeeper to Mayweather becoming one of the boxing greats? Why wouldn’t Mayweather want to fight someone with a world title rather than a belt-less former champion?

It gets better though. Khan said that he’s either at the same level as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or the Mexican fighter is a little bit above him.

“Maybe I’m at the same level as Canelo or he’s a little bit bigger than me,” Khan said.

I’m trying to understand what Khan means when he says that he’s around the same level as Canelo. Does Khan mean by size, talent or popularity? If it’s size that Khan is talking about, then, yeah, he’s a little bit taller than Canelo, but he’s still giving away at least 20 pounds. But if it’s talent or popularity, then I really have to disagree with Khan here. He’s miles away from Canelo in terms of popularity in the United States, and he’s definitely not on the same level in terms of talent. I mean, if you throw Khan in the ring with Canelo, I seriously doubt that you’re going to see Khan out-box Canelo.

You might see Khan give Canelo some problems for a little while if Khan runs from him, but as soon as Canelo catches up to Khan, I see him doing the same thing that Danny Garcia did to Khan with him knocking him out.
