By Aaron Mellon: Amir Khan takes on Devon Alexander in Vegas on 13th December knowing this is a make or break fight for his career. A solid performance and result could open the door to mega money fights with pound for pound kings Mayweather and Pacquiao. A further defeat or even worse a knock out defeat will surely spell the end at the top table.

Over the last few years Amir Khan has attracted a great deal of interest on this site and I would like to add my views on the Bolton man before discussing the Alexander fight further.

Amir Khan is a word class fighter, he has faced a number of high level operators over the years: Maidana, Judah, Malignaggi, Kotelnik, Garcia and Peterson. However, Khan is one of the most vulnerable word class fighters you are ever likely to see. His punch resistance is very poor, he can be easily stalked around the ring, roughed up and dragged into the trenches.

The impact of Virgil Hunter is still to be determined given Khan has not fought a top level fighter since Garcia in 2012.

I do not believe Khan has in any way deserved a shot at Mayweather up until now, there are several more deserving fighters : Pacquiao, Garcia , Brook and Bradley to name a few.

The fight against Alexander is an interesting one and has divided the boxing world. Alexander has a good record, has also fought a number of world class fighters and has a decent KO record. However, if Amir can apply his boxing brain, speed, combinations and work rate this should be a relatively straight forward points win. I really see Alexander struggling with Khan’s hand speed.

There is always that danger with Khan though that one clean shoot could change the fight entirely, and this is why Virgil Hunter was brought in. If Khan reverts to type then this may happen, however, I really feel Khan has learnt his lessons from the past. If he hasn’t, then I doubt he ever will.

Assuming my prediction is correct and Khan gets the nod on the judges scorecards a potential fight with Mayweather awaits, whether this is deserved still remains to be seen. One fight Khan should most certainly avoid if the Mayweather fight does not materialize is a domestic dust up with Kell Brook. I see this ending very badly for Amir Khan.
