Hatton thinks Khan will beat Alexander

khan555By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion Ricky Hatton thinks that Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) will come out on top in his fight on December 13th against American Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Khan-Alexander fight will be the head-liner fight on a Showtime televised card. Hatton points to Khan’s recent change of fighting style to where he’s become a more cautious fighter less willing to mix it up like before. Hatton believes that a smarter more restrained Khan will beat Alexander on December 13th.

“I think Amir will win,” Hatton said via Skysports.com. “I think he’s probably slight favorite but most people would probably pick it as a 50-50 fight. Amir normally can jab, move, use his ability for a few rounds and then the red mist sets in, but he showed a real mature performance against Collazo.”

I don’t know that it matters whether Khan plays it safe or not against Alexander. Khan is going to get hit a lot in this fight, because Alexander has fast hands, decent power, and excellent timing.

It doesn’t matter how much running, holding and head-locks Khan puts Alexander in. He’s going to get hit by him with some big shots in every round, and eventually I see Alexander hurting Khan with something.

Once Khan is hurt, he’ll be nearly helpless like he was against Breidis Prescott, Marcos Maidana, and Danny Garcia. Khan will obviously try and hold his way out of danger, but Alexander has too much skills for him to be tied up for a large portion of the round. Eventually, he’ll get his hands free and look to finish Khan off with something big enough to put him down on the canvas.

The Khan-Alexander fight is an important one for Khan, because if he wins the fight then he’ll have a decent chance at getting a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr next year in May. I won’t say that Khan will have a great chance of getting that fight, because if Khan stinks up the joint by holding and running all night long against Alexander then I don’t see Mayweather choosing to face him.

Mayweather won’t want to fight someone as negative as Khan, because it would potentially be a messy fight where Mayweather would likely be held or shoved constantly by Khan.

“Floyd is running out of opponents, so Amir Khan has got every chance of securing him,” Hatton said.

Mayweather may be running out of opponents, but he still has more than enough to finish out his career without him having to face Khan and deal with his holding and shoving. Mayweather can always fight the likes of Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, and Manny Pacquiao rather than having to deal with a runner/holder like Khan.
