Froch says he’ll probably retire if he doesn’t get Vegas fight

froch789By Scott Gilfoid: 37-year-old IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) says he may retire if he doesn’t get a fight under the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada for his next fight. For some reason, Froch badly wants to fight in Vegas.

Why he wants to fight there is anyone’s guess. He seems to see it as an important event, even though there are plenty of mediocre fighters that fight in Vegas all the time. Fighting in Vegas is nice, but just because someone fights in that city it doesn’t mean they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Froch has his eyes on former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr as an opponent for the Vegas fight. It’s a fight that would have been a good one two years ago before Chavez Jr was exposed by Sergio Martinez, but since then Chavez Jr has dealt with a suspension along with two poor performances against middleweight Brian Vera, who Chavez Jr dragged up to the super middleweight division to fight instead of him facing a legitimate super middleweight.

Vera arguably beat Chavez Jr in their first fight, but found himself on the receiving end of a highly controversial decision. Why Froch would still want to fight Chavez Jr after how poor he looked in the Martinez and Vera fights are anyone’s guess.

“The Vegas dream is there, but if it doesn’t happen, I’ll probably retire,” Froch said via the mirror.co.uk. “Right now, it’s 60/40 that I will retire. Fighters do it all the time. They fight on too long.”

There are plenty of better fighters than Chavez Jr who would likely take a fight against Froch in Vegas in a second if he were interested. Froch could probably get the likes of Andre Ward, Anthony Dirrell, Andre Dirrell, Sergey Kovalev, Artur Beterbiev, Bernard Hopkins, Adonis Stevenson, Sakio Bika or Gilberto Ramirez.

I rate all of those guys as well above Chavez Jr in the talent department, and I could see any of them getting in the ring with Froch to help him live his dream of fighting in Vegas. But if Froch is only dialed into fighting Chavez Jr, then, yeah, he may not get his Vegas dream fight if Chavez Jr is looking to go in another direction.

I personally don’t see why Froch wants to fight Chavez Jr after how bad he looked against Martinez and Vera. Froch would be better off facing one of the aforementioned fighters from my list, because at least those guys have been fighting and haven’t looked horrible recently or been out of the ring for ages.
“By May I’ll have been out a year – and the longer it goes, the less likely I’ll ever fight again,” Froch said.

It would be a pity if Froch were to hang up his gloves without fighting one of the talents from my list. I mean, Froch already fought Andre Dirrell, and he was given a controversial decision in Nottingham. There’s obviously unfinished business between Dirrell and Froch that he should be looking to clear up before he retires.

Froch also should be looking to avenge his loss to Ward so that he can clear the air before he retires. I don’t know how Froch wouldn’t want to test his chin against the likes of Beterbiev and Kovalev. Those would be huge fights no matter where they took place.
