Carl Frampton to defend title against Chris Avalos on 2/28 in Belfast

frampton22By Scott Gilfoid: IBF World super bantamweight belt holder Carl Frampton (19-0, 13 KOs) will be making his first title defense in the next two months against #1 IBF, #1 WBO, #4 WBA Chris Avalos (25-2, 19 KOs) on February 25th at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.

Avalos feels confident that he’ll be whipping Frampton in front of his own fans on 2/25, as he said “I am going to win, and it will be by knockout,” as quoted by Skysports.com.

It’s hard to disagree with Avalos because Frampton’s style of fighting is the kind that Avalos has done well against his entire career. The only guys that have given Avalos any problems during his career have been Jhonatan Romero and Christopher Martin.

Both of those guys defeated Avalos, but that was a while ago and he’s improved his game a lot. Avalos has won his last six fights since his loss to Romero in 2011. In Avalos’ last two fights, he’s beaten Jose Cen Torres and Yasutaka Ishimoto to earn the IBF mandatory position.

Frampton defeated Kiko Martinez by a hard fought 12 round decision last September.

“I can guarantee I am going to beat Chris Avalos convincingly,” Frampton said.

Frampton is interested in facing WBA champion Scott Quigg. Frampton and his trainer Shane McGuigan don’t appear to be all that interested in getting into the ring with WBO champion Guillermo Rigondeaux right now. It’s unclear when or if they ever will.

Avalos could upset Frampton’s plans on fighting Quigg by knocking him out in February. Avalos has the kind of hand speed and high volume punch attack that will give Frampton a great deal of problems in this fight. I think this is going to wind up as a nightmarish opponent for Frampton, and the only way I can see him not losing is if we see a controversial decision.
