Why Chris Algieri will beat Pacquiao

algieri6By BK: This Saturday night, the little known Chris Algieri will step into what could end up being the biggest fight of his career against Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao for the 147 welterweight WBO world championship.

Algieri is coming off a 12 round split decision victory over Ruslan Provodnikov to win the light welterweight 140 WBO world title. Algieri was a huge underdog in this fight due to fighting on undercards and not being part of big fights that would generate a huge recognition in the casual fan eye.

Only the hardcore fans will gave a good idea on Chris Algieri is, he was brutally put down to the canvas twice by Provodnikov which resulted in a badly swollen right eye from round one, after these knockdowns many believed it was only a matter of time before Ruslan would finish Algieri but it wasn’t to be as Algieri came back focused, willing and hungry to get himself back into the fight and win a decision to win his first world title and will be set to shock the world again this weekend when he faces arguably one of the best pound for pound fighters in history of boxing, Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao is coming off a 12 round unanimous decision victory over Tim Bradley in April, a fight in which he regained the WBO title he lost in their controversial first fight in June 2012 in a fight many believed Pacquiao had one but Bradley got the decision. In some fans eyes Manny is still yet to impress since suffering back to back losses to Bradley and long time rival Juan Manual Marquez in 2012 and in this fight Manny and his trainer Freddie Roach are looking for a knockout victory to put Manny back on the map as one of the best fighters in boxing today and to look good in doing it. For me this won’t happen, and not because Manny hasn’t knocked a opponent out since Miguel Cotto in 2009 but because of the talent of Chris Algieri.

Algieri has a masters degree and is a incredibly smart skilled fighter in a lot of departments. Algieri took Provodnikov’s hardest shots and still managed to survive and win the fight, Provodnikov definately has more power than Pacquiao, he may not be as quick or slick as Pacquiao but when Provodnikov connects with one of his power shots, chances are you’re going to be rocked if you have a good chin or put down and knocked out if its suspect. Algieri will know and be wary of the speed and work rate that Pacquiao brings to the table and will be looking to box and keeping out of harms way and likely go to a decision, Algieri needs to make sure he has a good work rate in this fight, Algieri is tall and has a long reach on Pacquiao so he can keep the fight at a pace and distance as he wishes, but one thing is for sure, if Provodnikov didn’t knock Algieri out, Pacquaio won’t unless Algieri walks onto a big shot.
