By Scott Gilfoid: Tyson Fury (23-0, 17 KOs) earned the right to face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last night in beating an over-matched plodding Dereck Chisora (20-5, 13 KOs) by a 10th round TKO in their WBO heavyweight eliminator at the ExCel Arena in London, UK.
Fury, 6’9”, made it a point to call out the 38-year-old Wladimir after the fight, as if something like that were needed for him to validate himself as a future challenger.
“Wladimir Klitschko, I’m coming for you, baby. No retreat, no surrender, Fury said after the fight.
Fury obviously lacks the punching power, hand speed and chin to give Wladimir any problems. We’re talking Kubrat Pulev 2.0. At best, Fury will be lucky if he can make it 5 round, but I’d be surprised if he makes it even that far because he’s going to be getting nailed all night long by Wladimir.
Fury is kidding himself if he thinks he’s going to be getting a title shot against Wladimir in the near future. I’d be surprised if Fury gets a crack at Wladimir at all in 2015, because I see Wladimir as having bigger fish to fry in looking to face the winner of the Bermane Stiverne vs. Deontay Wilder clash.
That’s a much bigger fight for Wladimir to take than for him to face Fury, who boxing fans in the U.S have no clue about. Wladimir will likely be defending his title against American Bryant Jennings in 2015. With Wladimir’s new 3-fight contract with HBO, you can bet that Jennings and the winner of the Stiverne-Wilder fight will be his top two priorities in 2015.
Fury should look to stay busy by fighting Pulev, Alexander Povetkin and/or Tony Thompson in 2015. Fury will have a lot of time to wait around for the Wladimir fight, and he’d be helping himself if he were to take on some decent heavyweights instead of the punching bags he’s been fighting in Chisora and Joey Abell.
