By Allan Fox: Former world champion Lennox Lewis was impressed with the ease of IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s win over Kubrat Pulev (20-1, 11 KOs) last Saturday night in Hamburg, Germany.
Lewis says that Pulev was a mere bruiser, and that Wladimir needs to think about improving the level of his opposition. If it was up to Wladimir, he likely wouldn’t have taken the fight with Pulev, because it wasn’t a fight that he was all that excited about from the get go.
“[it was] Easy work for Klitschko against a one dimensional bruiser. Want to see him face the best division has to offer though. He still wins though,” Lewis said on his twitter.
Pulev had a lot more going for him than him being a mere bruiser, as Lewis describes him. Pulev came into the fight with an excellent jab, and a defensive style that would have given most heavyweights fits. Wladimir was off balance for much of the fight, and unable to land his jabs and right hands with any regularity. The only thing that Wladimir was able to land was his left hook, which he went to over and over again in the process of knocking Pulev down four times and stopping him in the 5th.
Pulev was fortunate to make it out of the 1st round, because he was badly hurt after getting hit with a left hook from Wladimir that he never saw. The second knockdown in the 1st round was more of a push than an actual punch, but it was pretty clear that Pulev was lucky to make it out of the round.
There aren’t too many better heavyweights in the division right now than Pulev. If Lewis believes that Wladimir needs to start facing better opposition then he should recommend some guys for him to fight. Bermane Stiverne, Deontay Wilder, Dereck Chisora, Tyson Fury and Bryant Jennings are all flawed in their own ways.
