David Price battles Emilio Ezequiel Zarate on December 6

price5By Scott Gilfoid: #9 WBO, #13 IBF heavyweight contender David Price (18-2, 15 KOs) will be back inside the ring next month against journeyman Emilio Ezequiel Zarate (18-13-3, 9 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the the EWE Arena in Oldenburg, Germany.

Price, 6’8”, has been licking his wounds for the past five months after suffering a hand injury. Price’s German promoters have been trying to rebuild his career following back to back defeats at the hands of American Tony Thompson in 2013.

The hand injury obviously hasn’t helped things for the soon to be 32-year-old Price, but one gets the sense that even if he had stayed healthy, he’d still have been fighting guys in the same caliber of Zarate.

In other words, I don’t see Price’s handlers taking any chances with him until he gets an eventual world title shot in 2-3 years. I mean, Price’s been flapping his gums lately about fighting British prospect Anthony Joshua, but I don’t see that happening at all. Only way Price fights Joshua is if his career is on skid row to the point where he’s taking the fight to get a little pay day as an opponent.

The Price-Zarate fight will be taking place on the undercard of the clash between IBF cruiserweight belt holder Yoan Pablo Hernandez (29-1, 14 KOs) and Ola Afolabi (21-3-4, 10 KOs).

The major question that pops up in the minds of many boxing fans is why is Price being matched up against such God awful opposition. I mean, if Price’s handlers believe in him then surely they would want to put him in against better opposition so that they could get him ready for an eventual world title shot.

Price has been matched up against pure fodder since he signed on with his German handlers, and it’s looking more and more like he’s going to be matched against weak opposition until he eventually gets his title shot.

“I can’t wait to get back into the ring and back to what I do best,” said Price. “This will be my first fight on terrestrial television and it’s a great opportunity for me to show everybody what I can do. I’m working hard every day in the gym and the time I’ve spent out with injury has only made me hungrier. On December 6, people are going to see me at my most dangerous. I’m coming with bad intentions. I want put in a performance and entertain all the fans watching.”

Oh brother, Price talking big about his fodder opponent, as if this was a real threat to him.
