Abel Sanchez: Canelo will fight Golvokin, Cotto will not

bengggabel102813By Jesse James: Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of WBA “Super” and WBC interim Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, believes Canelo Alvarez will fight Golovkin if he beats Cotto. Sanchez believes Cotto will not fight Golovkin if he wins. Canelo has stated multiple times he will fight Golovkin and isn’t afraid, even Oscar De la Hoya stated that Canelo is indeed interested and that fight is a possibility next year.

As for Miguel Cotto the current WBC and lineal Middleweight champion, there hasn’t been much interest in fighting Golovkin next providing that he beats Canelo sometime next year. The only talk of a Golovkin bout came from his trainer Freddie Roach.

Roach stated he doesn’t see anything special about Golovkin and would look at that fight if Cotto beats Canelo. Top rank Promoter Bob Arum has a different idea in mind. He’d like to match up Miguel Cotto in a fight against former light welterweight and welterweight champion Timothy Bradley who recently lost to current WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. In my opinion that’s a disgusting matchup and I hope it never is materialized even if Cotto beats Canelo Alvarez. I mean, how why would you want a welterweight who isn’t even ranked in the top 15 at 154 or 160 fight for the middleweight title of the world? It makes no sense to me but that’s Arum for you with his controversial tactics of promoting.

Regardless, Abel Sanchez thinks Golovkin knocks both Canelo and Cotto out. He believes Canelo would put up a better fight but is stopped in 8th, but as for Cotto he believes he’s stopped in 5. If Canelo wins I fully expect him to fight Golovkin.

As for Cotto I see him going with Arums idea of fighting Bradley. Don’t be surprised if that fight is made. Arum recently has said he’d like to match up Super featherweight Mikey Garcia and Lightweight Terence Crawford against Welterweight Manny Pacquiao. Having smaller guys against bigger guys isn’t a problem at Top Rank as long as the fight is made and the fighters accept. Nonetheless talks have already begun for Cotto-Canelo fight and Canelo stated he’d accept all of Cotto’s demand including being the A-side as long as the fight is in Vegas.

Stay tuned boxing world.
