Julio Cesar Chavez Jr thinks his contract with Top Rank has expired

chavez992By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) believes his contract with Top Rank promotions has expired and that he’s now a free agent, according to ESPN Deportes. However, Top Rank still believes that Chavez Jr is still under contract until April of 2016.

At this point it’s unclear who is right. It’s going to have to be determined in court obviously. How long that will take is anyone’s guess. Hopefully Chavez Jr and Top Rank can find out sooner rather than later so that Chavez Jr isn’t sitting out of action for an extended period of time like we’re seeing with WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward, who has legal issues with his own promoter.

“I have been told my contract has already ended,” Chavez Jr told ESPN. “I have offers to fight Carl Froch in the United States and England to fight the winner of the Gennady Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio. Even to fight at 158 pounds with Floyd Mayweather. Let’s see what comes.”

If Chavez Jr is still under contract with Top Rank then he’s going to need to try and make those fights happen as soon as possible. Guys like Mayweather and Froch won’t likely be still fighting at the end of 2016 when Chavez Jr’s contract runs out with Top Rank, if it runs out then.

It’s unclear whether the contract will be extended if Chavez Jr fails to fight a certain amount of fights each year. If the contract is worded like that then Chavez Jr might end up fighting longer than 2016 unless he gets busy. Chavez Jr hasn’t fought since last March when he defeated Brian Vera by a 12 round unanimous decision in their rematch. Chavez Jr has now been out of the ring for the past 7 months, and he still doesn’t have any fights planned.

Besides Mayweather, Golovkin, Rubio and Froch as possible opponents for Chavez, he says that a fight between him and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a possibility at 162 as well.
