Floyd Sr: Pacquiao wants to fight Mayweather because he needs the money

pac006By Chris Williams: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr thinks WBO 147lb champ Manny Pacquiao is only interested in fighting the No.1 fighter in boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr because he’s hard up for money and wants to get the big payday he’d receive in fighting him.

That’s the reason why Floyd Sr says Pacquiao has suddenly started showing interest in fighting him. Floyd Sr thinks the Filipino superstar never had any true interest in fighting Mayweather Jr in the past, but now that he feels that Pacquiao is in need of money, he’s started to show interest.

“Pacquiao never wanted to fight Floyd. But now that he got knocked out, he does,” Floyd Sr. said via Thaboxingvoice.com. “He wants to fight Floyd because he needs money. He knows that if he wants to make money, he needs to fight Floyd. If he doesn’t fight Floyd, he is another poor man you see walking in the streets.”

In fairness to Pacquiao, I have a hard time picturing him being a poor man walking the streets given the kind of loot that he’s made during his boxing career. The only way I can see a scenario like that playing out is if Pacquiao were to give everything he has to poor after he retires from the sport, because otherwise he’s obviously going to have enough to retire in the Philippines and live a nice life. The money that Pacquiao can make in politics will obviously pay him well for as long as he chooses to work in that field.

“If they fight, you know what is going to happen to Manny,” said Floyd Sr. “Even though my son is older now, Floyd is going to take him apart. It would be a mismatch.”

Pacquiao would almost surely have major problems if he were to fight Mayweather due to his elusiveness, size and skills advantage over the 35-year-old Pacquiao. Mayweather would be almost impossible to hit unless he were to stand still and let Pacquiao walk up on him to land his shots. Mayweather would stay on the move and present an unhittable target for 12 rounds.

Pacquiao was knocked clean out by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012, and ever since then Pacquiao has been trying to rebuild his boxing career by fighting his promoter Bob Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters Brandon Rios and Tim Bradley. Pacquiao will be fighting a light puncher in Chris Algieri next month on November 22nd, but Arum still hasn’t put Pacquiao in with a really good fighter since the blowout loss to Marquez.
