Donaire Sr hoping Nicholas Walters attacks Nonito

donaire4By Chris Williams: Nonito Donaire Sr says he’s hoping that WBA regular featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) goes on the attack against his son Donaire Jr (33-2, 21 KOs) in their fight in a week and a half at the on HBO Championship Boxing from the StubHub Center, in Carson, California, USA.

Walters, 28, is the type of fighter who doesn’t go on the attack much. Instead, he’s the type of guy who takes advantage of his opponents attacking style. In that case, we could see Donaire having problems when he goes after Walters with his left hooks.

Walters likes to land counter shots, and he’s got excellent power and size.

“That’s good [if he attacks] it will be easier for Junjun (Donaire Jr.) to find an opening,” said Donaire Sr to gmanetwork.com. “Junjun did very well in sparring against Stan Martyniouk who is bigger and taller than him. If Junjun can execute our strategy then we’ll have no problem.”

If this is going to be a battle of the counter punchers on October 18th, then you have to go with the bigger, stronger and younger guy, and that’s Walters. He’s got the youth advantage over Donaire. Walters is someone that will give him big problems once he starts landing his power shots.

We saw what Walters was able to do to Vic Darchinyan last May in Walters’ 5th round stoppage win. Walters has knocked out 10 out of his 11 opponents dating back to 2010. Those numbers are very similar to knockout punchers Gennady Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev. It tells you that Walters is an unreal puncher and not someone to be taken lightly.

Donaire is getting up there in age at 31, and he’s about to 32 next month. He’s clearly not the same fighter he was three years ago when he was dominating the likes of Fernando Montiel and Omar Andres Narvaez.

Donaire has clearly slowed down since then and he’s a lot more hittable now. At featherweight, Donaire likely won’t be able to dominate like he did in the super flyweight and bantamweight divisions.
