De La Hoya thinks Canelo-Cotto is fight boxing fans want to see, not Mayweather-Pacquiao

canelo90By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that the fight that boxing fans are craving to see right now is a clash between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) rather than Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

De La Hoya thinks that the Canelo-Cotto fight can bring in over 2 million pay-per-view buys despite the fact that neither Canelo or Cotto have proven themselves capable of drawing above 300,000 PPV buys when they were the A-side of a PPV card.

De La Hoya thinks that women will help raise the PPV totals for a fight between Canelo and Cotto because of them being big fans of the two.

“Forget about Mayweather- Pacquiao, let’s start talking about Canelo-Cotto. From the feedback that I’ve been receiving everywhere I go, phone calls that I get, emails I receive, it’s Canelo-Cotto,” De La Hoya said via Thaboxingvoice.com.

De La Hoya might be assuming a little too much in thinking that boxing fans are going to want to see Canelo and Cotto fight in huge numbers. It’s a decent fight, but far from a really great one. Cotto has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, and he’s arguably a shot fighter. He’s won his last two fights, but he’s done it against Sergio Martinez and Delvin Rodriguez, guys that have seen better days in their careers.

It’s not as if Cotto beat anyone at the top of their game at 160 like Gennady Golovkin. At this point, it would be nice to see Cotto try and avenge his loss to Austin Trout, because he gave Cotto a boxing lesson in beating him in 2012.

Canelo Alvarez was schooled last year by Mayweather Jr. Since that fight, Canelo has beaten a weight drained Alfredo Angulo and Erislandy Lara. The win over Lara was a controversial one due to Canelo being out-boxed in that fight. Many boxing fans felt that Canelo lost to Lara, as well as to Trout.

I believe the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is a much bigger fight than Canelo-Cotto. I see Canelo vs. Cotto bringing in 800,000 PPV buys at best; whereas a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight could probably do 2 million buys if Pacquiao doesn’t get tripped up by Chris Algieri on November 22nd.
