De La Hoya: Mayweather vs. Khan is only a matter of time and where

floyd6002By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya feels very confident that a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Amir Khan will be made soon and it’s just over the boxing horizon.

Khan has been talking up the Mayweather fight tirelessly, and we’re now seeing trainer Floyd Mayweather Jr talking up the fight as well.

“The Mayweather-Khan fight is only a matter of when and where,” De La Hoya said via Golden Boy Promotions twitter.

If what De La Hoya says is true then he’d better contact Mayweather to try and make the Mayweather-Khan fight happen sooner rather than later, because if he doesn’t work on putting the fight together by early next year then he’ll have lost his chance. Mayweather says he wants to fight in May and September in 2015, and that leaves Khan only once change of fighting him in May. Khan can’t fight in September due to Ramadan.

Mayweather isn’t going to give up on the idea of him fighting in September in order to accommodate Khan, especially when he has no way of knowing whether Khan will bring in any more pay-per-view buys than Mayweather’s last opponent Marcos Maidana. Khan may not be popular enough in the U.S for him to make much of a difference as Mayweather’s next opponent.

Khan might be the only guy left in Golden Boy’s stable that Mayweather will bother fighting before he retires. Mayweather already fought Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert Guerrero. The only other options left with Golden Boy are Khan and Danny Garcia, and neither of them promise to bring in big bank. Mayweather might be better of looking to fight Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Kell Brook or Gennady Golovkin.

There’s a lot of unknowns with Khan. He’s popular in the UK, but he doesn’t seem to bring in the big ratings in the U.S on Showtime. The reason for that could be the poor opposition that Khan routinely faces, but then again it could be that casual boxing fans simply don’t know and don’t care who he is. Mayweather will need to study the idea of fighting Khan closely to make sure that he makes the right business decision if he chooses to fight him. The last thing Mayweather needs is to fight an opponent who doesn’t have a fan base in the United States.
