Chad Dawson: They must want to throw me out of the game

Fight Night-0001(Photo Credit: Amanda Kwok / SHOWTIME) By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC 175 pound champion Chad Dawson (32-4, 18 KOs) is convinced that the powers that be are looking to throw him out of the sport of boxing following his close 10 round split decision loss to Tommy Karpency (24-4-1, 14 KOs) last night in Dawson’s fight on Showtime from the Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Dawson was a huge favorite to win the fight coming in. Indeed, he was a 25:1 favorite to defeat Karpency, who had never beaten anyone remotely talented before in his 8 year pro career. But Dawson failed to fight as hard as he needed to in order to impress the three judges, especially late in the fight when he was outworked by Karpency.

The judges scored the fight 96-94, 96-94 for Karpency and 96-94 for Dawson. In explaining why he lost, Dawson says he hurt his left shoulder in the 3rd round, but he still feels he did enough in just using his right hand. In looking at the fight, Dawson was still using his left shoulder until the 7th round.

In that round you could see clearly that he’d hurt his left arm after he landed a shot. It could be that Dawson was confused about which round he hurt his arm. Either way, he wasn’t doing well in the 3rd round nor in the 7th.

“I hurt my shoulder in the 3rd round,” Dawson said after the fight. “I fought him with one hand. I landed more jabs than he did punches. That’s bull [expletive]. That’s [expletive] bull [expletive]. I can’t talk right now. They must want to throw me out of the game. They must want me out of here. I don’t know. I fought with one arm. Come on, man. That’s crazy. I fought him with one arm from the third round.”

Dawson’s career is in a bad place right now because that was his 3rd defeat in his last 4 fights, and it’ll likely knock him out of the top 15 rankings.

At 32, it’s difficult to see Dawson being able to climb his way back to a top five ranking. He’d been talking about wanting to fight for a world title in early 2015 after one more tune-up fight later this year, but obviously that’s not going to happen. With tough light heavyweights like Adonis Stevenson, Artur Beterbiev and Sergey Kovalev, there may not be a place for Dawson even if he does work his way back to a high ranking in the light heavyweight division.
