Braehmer faces Pawel Glazewski on December 6th

brahmer344By Dan Ambrose: WBA World light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (44-2, 32 KOs) will be defending his title against 32-year-old Pawel Glazewski (23-2, 5 KOs) on December 6th at the EWE-Arena, Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany.

This is a title milking fight for the 36-year-old Braehmer, because he could face much better opposition if he wished to. Glazewski isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies, and he was recently knocked out last year by Hadillah Mohoumadi in 7 rounds.

In 2012, Glazewski was easily beaten by then 43-year-old Roy Jones Jr in a mostly one-sided fight from start to finish.

It’s surprising that the World Boxing Association is sanctioning the Braehmer-Glazewski fight, because with Glazewski’s lack of a top 15 ranking, this is a fight that really shouldn’t take place. It’s too much of a mismatch and there are far better opponents for Braehmer to fight.

Glazewski has won his last 3 fights since his knockout loss to Hadillah Mohoumadi last year. He’s beaten Andrei Salakhutdzinau, Maciej Miszkin and Rowland Bryant. Surely, #4 WBA Mohoumadi would be a far better opponent for Braehmer to fight than Glazewski.

Braehmer is one of the two WBA light heavyweight champions. The WBA has two title holders at 175 for some reason, and it’s confusing for more than a few boxing fans. The main title holder for the WBA is Bernard Hopkins, who is light years above Braehmer in the talent department.

Braehmer captured the WBA title in 2013 in beating little known Marcus Oliveira by a 12 round decision. Since winning the title, Braehmer has defended it twice against weak opposition in Enzo Maccarinelli and Roberto Bolonti.

Braehmer will likely have easy title defenses until #10 WBA Artur Beterbiev is ranked high enough to take Braehmer’s title from him. Until then, Braehmer will likely hold onto his WBA belt. It’s possible that he might be able to hold onto the title for another 2 years before the WBA makes Beterbiev the mandatory challenger for Braehmer.

’I’m looking forward to getting back in the ring and defending my title for a third time this year,’’ said Braehmer. ‘’Glazewski is a quality opponent and I’m sure we will entertain the fans with an exciting encounter at the EWE Arena. Recently, I have faced opposition who have either been well-conditioned or big punchers. Glazewski possesses both these attributes. Although he does a lot well, I do it all better. I’m superior to him in every aspect of the fight game. I will prove this come December 6!’’

Glazewski is arguably a couple steps down from Braehmer’s last two opponents in Maccarinelli and Bolonti. The WBA isn’t making it hard for Braehmer to hold onto his title. The WBA’s ranking system seems to be way off with the guys they have ranked. Beterbiev is far better in my view than the fighters that the WBA currently has ranked above him.
Here’s the WBA’s top 10 rankings for 175:

1. VACANT
2. Robin Krasniqi
3. Sean Monaghan
4. Nadjib Mohammedi
5. Radivoje Kalajdzic
6. Oleksandr Chewrviak
7. Konni Konrad
8. Dmitriy Sukhotsky
9. Enrico Koelling

10. Artur Beterbiev

Krasniqi has already been exposed by Nathan Cleverly. The other contenders are very average without the kind of talent that gives them any of shot to beat a limited champion like Braehmer.
