dirrell45666By Scott Gilfoid: Boxing fans are in for a real treat tonight with #9 WBC, #14 WBA Andre Dirrell (22-1, 15 KOs) back in action tonight on ESPN2 in fighting little known Nick Brinson (16-2-2, 6 KOs) in a 10 round fight at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA.

Dirrell, 31, weighed in at 169 pounds on Tuesday at the weigh-in for their fight at light heavyweight. Brinson came in at 168.8 pounds.

While the Dirrell-Brinson fight will be taking place on the undercard of the Jermain Taylor vs. Sam Soliman fight, it’s likely to steal the show due to Dirrell looking to make a strong impression on the nationwide audience that will be tuning in to watch the fight. Dirrell will have a great opportunity to show his stuff in this showcase fight.

The Soliman-Taylor could be a little tougher on the eyes due to the odd fighting style of Soliman. Taylor might struggle to figure out Soliman’s style in this fight, although I expect him to eventually figure it out and get the ‘W’ at the end.

This is Dirrell’s second fight since coming back from a long layoff in which he had problems getting fights. With him back with Al Haymon, Dirrell shouldn’t have any problems getting fights and maximum exposure.

Dirrell is looking for a title shot against IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch if he can get him in the ring, because he wants to avenge his loss from 2009 when he was beaten in Nottingham, UK by a controversial decision. Dirrell needs to a few good wins before he’ll be ranked high enough to get a title shot, but I seriously doubt Froch will ever face him again.

Instead of fighting Froch, Dirrell will need to be content fighting one of the other champions or whoever emerges to fight for Froch’s two titles once he gives them up at some point. Dirrell eventually could find himself in the ring with the likes of George Groves, James DeGale, Sakio Bika, Callum Smith or maybe even Arthur Abraham in the future.

In tonight’s fight, Dirrell just needs to focus on showing his speed and putting on an offensive display. Boxing fans want to see knockouts, so that’s what Dirrell needs most of all in this fight.
