Quillin will likely face Jacobs in fall, says De La Hoya

quillin3By Dan Ambrose: Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs) unexpectedly vacated his WBO middleweight title on Thursday after he’d earlier been given two extensions by the World Boxing Organization to sign for his November 1st title defense against mandatory challenger Matt Korobov.

A lot of boxing fans believe that Quillin and his adviser Al Haymon chose to relinquish the title due to the danger that Korobov presented to him. But Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya says that Quillin has his sights set on fighting WBA 160 pound champion Daniel Jacobs (28-1, 25 KOs) next fall at a still to be determined date and venue.

De La Hoya doesn’t know if Quillin will be able to get the $1.4 million that he would have received if he’d taken the Korobov fight, but he thinks they can try and get the money from Showtime.

Dan Rafael of ESPN said “I talked to Oscar De La Hoya today. He said Kid Chocolate most likely will fight Daniel Jacobs in the fall at the Barclays Center.”

Rafael asked De La Hoya if Showtime will be able to top the $1.4m that Quillin was set to get for the Korobov fight and De La Hoya said “We can always ask for it.”

Will Showtime want to pay more than $1.4 million for a fight between two fighters that have never proven to be pull in big ratings in Quillin and Jacobs? It’s difficult to imagine Showtime agreeing to pay anything close to that much for a fight between Quillin and Jacobs, because we’re talking about an undercard fight at best.

Quillin vs. Jacobs is not a headliner fighter. It might be something big on the East Coast in New York, but nationally a fight between those two guys are really more of a undercard fight as in the third fight from the top of the bill. Quillin will be lucky if he even gets $800,000 from Showtime. It’s not a great fight. The guys that boxing fans want to see Quillin fight is Gennady Golovkin or Miguel Cotto. All the other fighters mean little.

Jacobs did not look good in capturing the vacant WBA title against Jarrod Fletcher last month. Jacobs was taking punishment in the 5th round before coming on to get a stoppage over a very average Fletcher.
