pac55555By Raj Parmar: As the press tour for the welterweight championship fight between Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO’s) and Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KO’s) winded down this week, Pacquiao continued to inform the boxing world that a showdown with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KO’s) is on the horizon.

“There are serious negotiations with the Mayweather camp and my promoter,” Pacquiao said during the press tour, “Probably for next year (is when the fight would happen).”

Both Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum have been speaking about a potential Floyd fight at length during the Pacquiao-Algieri press tour but fans are remaining sceptical of the fight occurring despite the heavy talk by Team Pacquiao. There have been many attempts to make the match in past years when interest was at an extreme high, however the fight would never end up being made for one reason or another.

Arum has publically stated that the fight would have happened already had it not been for Mayweather’s undefeated record, as he feels Floyd is obsessed with the zero loss number and is not willing to take any risk in blemishing the clean record.

“Mayweather values his zero, his undefeated record more than life itself,” Arum said to online.wsj.com, “Remember now this isn’t a guy that has a lot of depth, this is a guy who lives on the surface as I see and being undefeated for him is everything.”

It is anyone’s guess at this point on what exactly is happening backstage regarding an overdue Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. It is incredible to think that Pacquiao and Arum would constantly be bringing up talks of negotiations with Mayweather at such a intense rate if there was absolutely nothing being discussed. On the other hand promoters are known to go to great lengths to promote fights and if discussing Mayweather helps generate buzz for Pacquiao-Algieri, huge exaggerations of a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight being seriously discussed is not past the brink of reality.
