Pacquiao: I can make Mayweather stand and fight

pac89898By Allan Fox: While Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) is putting on the finishing touches for his training camp to get ready and fight Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs), WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) has been busy talking up a Mayweather fight while touring with his next opponent Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) for their fight on November 22nd in Macao, China.

Pacquiao says he thinks he knows how to fight Mayweather and how he could force him to fight. He doesn’t say how he’d force Mayweather to brawl with him other than cutting off the ring on him and hoping he can trap him the way that Maidana did last May.

If Pacquiao picked up the idea of how to fight Mayweather by watching Mayweather vs. Maidana I, I’m afraid Pacquiao is following the wrong blueprint, because that’s not how Mayweather usually fights. He fought that way just once due to him fighting the overmatched Maidana rather than someone that he had to respect like Saul “Canelo“ Alvarez.

Pacquiao has taken an unusual method of trying to attract fans to purchase his fight against Algieri by talking about wanting to fight Mayweather. Normally something like this would make no sense at all, because it’s basically wasted time due to Pacquiao not talking enough about the fight that he actually does have against Algieri rather than the one that he would like to have. But by talking up a Mayweather fight, it could lead to more PPV buys for the Algieri fight because some fans will think that he’s going to be fighting Mayweather next up after the Algieri fight.

“I know how to fight him. I know what I’m doing,” Pacquiao said to NJ.com. “I know what his style is all about. So, if he don’t want to create action. I know how to create action. I know that I can make him stand and fight.”

Pacquiao thinks he knows how to fight Mayweather. He knows how to fight the Mayweather that fought Maidana, but obviously that’s not how Mayweather usually fights.

We’ve always know that Pacquiao knows how to fight stationary fighters and guys that come straight at him. That’s why it was easy for him to say that he knows how to fight Mayweather after seeing that recent fight. But the reality is Pacquiao doesn’t know how to fight Mayweather when he’s fighting in his normal fighting style, because if Pacquiao did know how to fight that kind of style then he wouldn’t have struggled so badly against Tim Bradley two times.
