Ortiz destroys Kayode

By Gav Duthie: Luis Ortiz 22-0 (19) ended the recent poor run of Cuban form with an impressive first round knockout over Latif Kayode 20-1 (16). Ortiz was really flying the flag for Cuban’s after recent defeats to Gamboa, Salinas, Lara and heavyweight duo Solis and Mike Perez.

This fight for the interim WBA heavyweight title was considered 50/50 with the Nigerian but Ortiz wasted no time knocking Kayode down in the first 30 seconds. Kayode had already been warned jumping in because of his inferior reach 10 seconds in as Ortiz countered with the left. The second time a sharp straight left, right uppercut sent him down. Kayode claimed a slip but it was very amateurish. Kayode seemed to regain his composure but in the last minute of the round Ortiz backed him up and unloaded in the corner around 10 unanswered punches. The referee stepped in immediately which was very premature but there is no doubting Ortiz was impressive.

The Cuban will no doubt feel the WBA regular strap is his next target currently looked after by Ruslan Chagaev. Both Ortiz and Chagaev are 35 years of age but the champion has been around for so long and suffered many injuries. I would fully expect Ortiz size advantage to once again make the difference and I fully expect him to become world champion soon.

On the undercard Josesito Lopez remains in the box seat with an 8 round points victory and prospects Charlo and Errol Spence Jnr also recorded victories.
