By Jim Dower: Last night, WBO super flyweight title holder Omar Narvaez (43-1-2, 23 KOs) retained his WBO title in defeating #1 WBO Felipe Orucuta (29-3, 24 KOs) by an impressive 12 round majority decision in a fight staged at the Anfiteatro Municipal de Villa Maria in Cordoba, Argentina.

Narvaez gradually wore down the challenger Orucuta with a powerful head and body attack over the course of the bout, and then cruised to a 12 round decision victory. The final judges’ scores were 114-114, 116-112, and 116-112.

It appeared to be a clear win for Narvaez and it’s hard to understand what the judge was watching who scored the fight a draw at 114-114. The last half of the fight belonged to the busier and stronger Narvaez. Despite getting up there in age, the 39-year-old Narvaez is still fighting at a high level.

Narvaez has now won his last 8 fights since losing a 12 round decision to former WBO World bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire. Narvaez moved up in weight to take the fight with Donaire and he ended up giving him a lot of problems with his air-tight defense. Donaire was unable to hurt Narvaez with any of his power shots because he was hard to hit cleanly.

In other action on last Friday night’s card, middleweight Jorge Sebastian Heiland (24-4-2, 12 KOs) defeated Mateo Veron (19-14-2, 3 KOs) by a 5th round stoppage. Veron was knocked down once in the 3rd round and another time in the 5th. The fight was halted in the 5th after Heiland, #5 WBC, opened up with a flurry of shots that led to the fight being halted.

Lightweight Raul Centeno (17-1-1, 7 KOs) defeated a game but limited Gustavo Bermudez (16-13-2, 6 KOs) by a 6 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 58-56, 58-56, 59-56.
