Mayweather: Pacquiao is broke and desperate for a payday

By Chris Williams: In what appears to be a response to the comment that WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao took two days ago on his Twitter site, Floyd Mayweather Jr responded with his own Tweet, saying that Pacquiao is broke and desperate in looking for a payday. Mayweather also said that Pacquiao’s PPV numbers are what he feels are a joke.

Pacquiao has been mentioning Mayweather’s name frequently ever since Pacquiao signed for a fight against little known Chris Algieri on November 22nd. It’s no secret that boxing fans have been less than excited about that match-up, as they see the fight as a mismatch.

Algieri has good skills and I believe an excellent chance of beating the 35-year-old Filipino star, but fans see him as nothing more than the next victim for Pacquiao. Further, Algieri has proven to be less than charismatic in his interviews, and his overall niceness towards Pacquiao clearly isn’t helping to attract interest in their fight.

Pacquiao said on his Twitter site on September 24th “Floyd Mayweather’s testimony to the commission on All Access; authenticity tells me everything I need to know about his desire to fight me.”

Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum are highly interested in a fight against Mayweather for 2015, but it doesn’t look like that’s the game plan for Mayweather. He said it himself that he’d fight Pacquiao once he was no longer with Arum, but Pacquiao perhaps didn’t believe Mayweather was serious because he went ahead and re-upped with Top Rank for another 2 years beyond 2014.

Mayweather has a lot of options ahead of him for his final year in the sport in 2015, and at this point he doesn’t need Pacquiao. Mayweather obviously would take a fight against him if it were under the ideal conditions that he’s looking for, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

In 2015, fans could see Mayweather fighting the likes of Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. At least two of those names will be from this list of fighters, and those would all be big fights.
