SHOSPORTS-Matthysse vs Ortiz-9765(Photo Credit: Stephanie Trapp / SHOWTIME) By Jim Dower: Lucas Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) did his job tonight in stopping #2 WBC Roberto Ortiz (31-1-1, 24 KOs) with a powerful body shot in the 2nd round tonight to move past what many boxing fans thought was going to be a formidable opponent for him at the U.S Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The knockout came by a perfectly placed Matthysse left hand to the liver or Ortiz. The Mexican fighter stayed down too long and misjudged the count. Ortiz rose at 9 instead of 10 and he just barely missed beating the count.

In being interview by Showtim’s Jim Gray after the fight, Matthysse said “Now I challenge Danny Garcia not to be a chicken and come and fight me a real boxer. For the title or without the title I’ll fight Danny Garcia. If I don’t get Danny, I’ll fight Adrien Broner or anybody else.”

The Broner fight would seem like the most likely match-up for Matthysse in the near future, because Danny Garcia has already said he’s not interested in fighting Matthysse again. He sees Matthysse as a fighter in his rear-view mirror and not someone that he wants to fight again after he beat Matthysse last September by a 12 round decision.

It was thought that Broner and Matthysse’s adviser Al Haymon put them both on tonight’s card to setup a fight between them later this year. That would be the ideal situation and would help make up for the mismatch between Ortiz and Matthysse. That fight result was predictable ahead of time due to the poor opposition Ortiz had fought before facing Matthysse.

If Haymon wants to protect Broner then it’s possible he won’t let him fight Matthysse. It would be disappointing if Haymon does that but it’s also a predictable move by him because Broner has more to lose than Matthysse if he were to take another loss at this point in his career.
