By Raj Parmar: Four division champion and future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) has provided his take on the heavily documented glove issue surrounding Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana. Back in May, Floyd had rejected two pairs of Everlast MX gloves that Maidana wanted to use for the fight and instead demanded Marcos wear Everlast Powerlock gloves.
With the biggest payday of his career in jeopardy, Maidana was not in a position to walk away from the fight and begrudgingly used the Powerlock gloves. Marquez recently tried on the MX gloves and acknowledged that Maidana would no doubt be a much more dangerous opponent for Floyd with the MX gloves on. The Powerlock gloves are made of all foam while the MX model is made using a combination of foam and horse hair.
“These gloves are very light and do not have much cushioning. I can feel my knuckles as I hit the bag,” Marquez said in talking about the lightly padded MX gloves to espndeportes.com when testing the gloves, “You can really feel the knuckles impacting with these gloves.”
The Everlast MX are approved by the Nevada commission for use, however it should be noted that the first pair of custom designed MX gloves Maidana presented after the weigh-in for the first fight were disallowed by the commission as it seemed the cushioning around knuckle area had been worn out. Team Maidana then presented a second pair of stock MX gloves and the commission approved those for use, however Floyd by this time was adamant that Maidana use a fully foam glove such as the Powerlock model.
Maidana has used the Everlast MX gloves for many fights in his career and was hoping to be able to use them for the Mayweather rematch. Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe recently stated on a media conference call that Maidana would in fact have to use the Powerlock model again in the rematch.
Marquez is convinced that if Maidana fights Floyd with the MX gloves on, he can damage Floyd and attain maximize impact on his power punches.
“Because Maidana is a very hard hitter, Mayweather would not want Maidana to use these gloves,” Marquez explained, “Maidana can hurt Mayweather with these gloves as there is not a lot of cushioning around the knuckles of these gloves.”
