Malignaggi: Khan is more dangerous for Mayweather than Pacquiao

khan555By Scott Gilfoid: The general consensus with boxing fans is that if there’s anyone in the 147 to 154 pound divisions with a chance of beating Floyd Mayweather Jr, it’s Manny Pacquiao. He has the best combination of speed, power, work rate and aggressiveness to give Mayweather headaches if they were to ever come to terms for a mega fight. But Showtime commentator Paulie Malignaggi is under the impression that the guy that can do the most damage is someone like Amir Khan.

Malignaggi says that Khan’s quickness would make him a threat to defeating Mayweather and erasing his unbeaten record.

“A really intelligent boxing fan would understand that people like Amir Khan are more dangerous to Floyd Mayweather than Manny Pacquiao at this level, at this point,” Malignaggi told ESPN.

Khan does a lot of holding, and I’m not so sure that he could beat Mayweather unless there was a referee that looked the other way while Khan grabbed Mayweather in repeated head-locks and head-bending moves in each round to keep him from fighting back the way he normally does.

I mean, Khan has been doing a lot of holding ever since his fight against Marcos Maidana in 2010, but lately his holding has gone stratospheric with him holding 24/7 in his fights. If you carefully study Khan’s win over Luis Collazo and Lamont Peterson, you can see that Khan looked like he’d been surgically attacked to both of these guys with the way that he was always draping on the back of them or holding them in head-locks.

How in the heck is Mayweather supposed to fight Khan if he’s being chocked with a head-lock of if he’s being bent over into an ‘r’ shape with his head facing the canvas while Khan wrenches on the back of his neck?

“For the mainstream sports fans that don’t really understand boxing the way they should then the Mayweather- Pacquiao fight will always be the dream fight that never happened so if it can happen then it will generate a ton of interest, a ton of worldwide audience,” Malignaggi said. “But I actually think it’s a pretty easy fight for Floyd Mayweather to win and I think Khan would pose a big risk to the prefect record of Floyd Mayweather.”

I don’t know if Mayweather is going to fight Khan, so we may never find out whether Malignaggi is right or not. Mayweather did say that Khan still has Danny Garcia and Breidis Prescott problems. That could mean that unless Khan takes care of both of those problems then he’s not going to get a fight against him. The last time I checked, neither Prescott nor Garcia have been mentioned as possible opponents for Khan in December.
