Maidana’s going to get clowned if he doesn’t have a huge weight advantage tonight

Maidana, 31, had a comfortable 15 pound weight advantage last May in scaling in at 165 pounds the night of the fight compared to Mayweather’s 150. Boxing fans and the media like to point to Maidana’s aggressiveness and his fast blitzkrieg attack in the first 4 rounds of the fight as the factors for why Mayweather struggled. That’s not it.

What gave Maidana the advantage in the first fight against Mayweather was Maidana’s 15 pound weight advantage. 15 pounds may not mean much when you’re talking heavyweights, but for welterweights, 15 pounds is a huge proportion of a fighter’s weight.

So with Maidana having a huge advantage in weight over Mayweather, he was able to use his size to walk through Mayweather’s punches and hit him with super middleweight type punches. That’s what Maidana was the night of the fight. He was a super middleweight fighting a guy that just over the welterweight limit in Mayweather.

There’s a lot of curiosity about what Maidana will weigh tonight with some boxing fans thinking that he’s going to be coming in around 153-155, as Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia said he would. If Maidana does come into the fight at that weight, he’s going to be too drained to compete with Mayweather.

In Friday’s weigh-in, Maidana looked thin with visible far around his waist area. The extra fat is understandable because Maidana was seen taking frequent conversation breaks during his training camp, and he didn’t appear to be working out nearly as hard as Mayweather. Had Maidana put in more effort during training camp, he wouldn’t have fat on his sides like he showed yesterday at the weigh-in.
