Hearn predicts Khan won’t get Mayweather fight in May 2015

khan66By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is predicting that Amir Khan will come up dry in his hopes for getting a big payday fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr in May of 2015.

If Khan doesn’t get the fight with Mayweather in May, then he’s not going to get a fight against him in September of 2015 either, because Khan has Ramadan at that time. May 2015 is pretty much the end of the line for Khan in terms of him getting a fight against Mayweather. If it doesn’t happen at that time, then there’s next to no chance that Mayweather will bother fighting Khan in 2016 if Mayweather even continues his career. He’s talking about retiring at the end of 2015. As such, it’s either May 2015 or not at all for Khan.

Hearn says he’s been correct in the past in predicting that Khan wouldn’t get a fight against Mayweather in May and September of 2014, and now he’s extending his prediction to May of 2014. Hearn says Khan should just back off in constantly pushing for the Mayweather fight, and instead focus on just looking to get a fight against a guy that he can get a fight against in Hearn’s fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook.

I agree with Hearn about Khan needing to back off completely in pushing for the Mayweather fight because it doesn’t seem to be helping him talking about that fight 24/7. Khan just comes across as way too needy and that has got to be a turnoff.

If Khan would at least show that he could be a good fighter without Mayweather by making a name for himself by beating top guys instead of the 2nd tier old timers that he’s been facing mostly since his loss to Danny Garcia, then maybe Mayweather would want to fight Khan. But for Khan to be yapping day and night about wanting/needing the Mayweather fight, it’s clearly not working for him. At the same time that god awful opposition that Khan has been facing in his last three fights, it’s done absolutely nothing in helping him increase his popularity.

Mayweather likes to fight guys that are well respected and who are facing the best opposition. But with Khan dining on weak opponents over and over and over again, it’s actually working against him in trying to get the Mayweather fight. Yeah, Khan has stopped losing fights, but the way he’s done that by facing weak opposition has hurt his cause.

“I said around a year ago I didn’t think Floyd would fight Amir Khan in May. He didn’t. I also said he wouldn’t fight Amir in September. He didn’t. I’m now saying he won’t fight Amir next May,” Hearn said to the Dailymail.co.uk. “Now, I understand that everyone wants that fight but there also comes a time when you have to stop hanging around and prostituting yourself for a shot.”

Hearn wants Khan to fight Brook next year in an All UK type fight. It’ll probably be the biggest fight if Brook’s career because I don’t see him getting past Khan. Beating Brook would be a good start for Khan if he wants a Mayweather fight. Then all he would need to do is agree to fight Keith Thurman and prove that he can beat him, which I don’t think Khan can and I don’t think he will even try.

“When you have an opportunity to give the British public what they want in a huge all-British clash with Kell Brook for the world title,” Brook said. “If Amir misses the boat and doesn’t get the Mayweather fight he really is in no man’s land in the division.”

I think it’s pretty obvious that Khan is going to continue to be matched up against soft touches until gets either a Mayweather or a Manny Pacquiao fight. I think Khan will be a holding pattern until one of those fights happen or until it’s finally clear to Khan’s adviser Al Haymon that neither of those fights are going to happen.
