Golovkin already down to 165

golovkin63By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is already down to 165 pounds for his title defense against Marco Antonio Rubio for their fight next month for their “Mexican Style” clash on HBO Championship Boxing on 10/18 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Golovkin and Rubio weighed in on Monday in their WBC ordered 30-day weigh-in. What we learned from the weigh-in is that Golovkin is already at the weight pretty much for the fight, and that means he’s going to be very, very strong.

Rubio weighed in at 174.5 pounds. What that tells you is that he’s going to need to cut at least 15 pounds of water weight to make weight. He’s already in shape, so he’s not going to lose fat in the next 30 days. The weight that comes off from Rubio is going to be water weight that he sheds to get to the 160 pound limit.

Rubio will then put the weight back on overnight. When you’re talking 15 pounds of water weight that a fighter needs to shed to make weight, it means that fighter is more than likely to have stamina issues in the 2nd half of the fight.

For Rubio, he might be able to fight well for 6 rounds, but from that point on he’s likely to be gassed out and fighting on fumes. But then again, Rubio will be lucky if he’s still around past the 4th round because he plans on standing his ground and fighting Golovkin rather than running from him.

If Rubio doesn’t run it’s going to end badly for him because he doesn’t have the game to stand and trade with a fighter like Golovkin.

Golovkin is currently training in Big Bear, California with his trainer Abel Sanchez to put the finishing touches on their training camp.

Rubio is training at his trainer Robert Garcia’s gym in Oxnard, California. In Rubio’s last fight, he defeated Domenico Spada by a 10th round stoppage earlier this year in April. Spada is the best fighter that Rubio has fought since he was beaten by former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in 2012.

Rubio’s WBC interim middleweight title belt will be on the line for the Golovkin fight. Golovkin wants that belt so that he can force the current WBC champion Miguel Cotto to either fight him or vacate the title.

The chances are Cotto will lose his WBC title anyway once he fights Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, so there really is no point in Golovkin trying to box Cotto in. I don’t see Canelo or Cotto ever agreeing to fight Golovkin. He’s just too good right now.
