Gennady Golovkin: Untried, Unproven, Untested

golovkin97464By Victor Candelario: Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) has burst onto the boxing scene knocking out 90% of all opposition he has faced thus far. While boxing fans seem to believe the hype surrounding Golovkin, I haven’t yet welcomed GGG with open arms.

In my eyes he remains Untried, Unproven, & Untested. After watching several of his past fights I feel as though he has been put in the ring with outmatched, undersized opponents, who in my opinion, do not deserve to be in the ring against Golovkin.

For those who don’t know, the past 5 fighters he has faced is Daniel Geale, Osumanu Adama, Curtis Stevens, Matthew Macklin, and Nobuhiro Ishida. All of them have suffered 3 or more defeats, with Ishida suffering 9 losses in his boxing career. My question now remains who has Golovkin truly faced up to this point to truly be considered elite? To truly deserve this hype that has been surrounding him this past year? In my eyes he has faced nobodies, outmatched undersized opponents and did what he was suppose to do, knock them out. It would seem though he is finally taking a step up in competition as he is set to take on the hard hitting Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1 51, KOs). In my opinion Rubio will be by far the toughest fighter Golovkin has fought to date. The only blemish I see is that out of the 6 times Rubio has been defeated he has been stopped 3 times by knockout.

In has past 5 fights I have did my best to analyze Golovkin’s style and besides his incredible punching power I feel something is missing. He lacks head movement and has been caught with beautiful counters by Geale and Stevens. Geale of course got caught and Knocked out right after, and Stevens stunned him a bit when his counter landed but also got knocked out later in the fight. I’ve also noticed Golovkin to be stationary with slow footwork and to me, an easy target for a good boxer with slick movement and good ring generalship (Which out of his 30 victories and 27 KOs he has not yet faced). Now I do not at all hate Golovkin or think he is a bad fighter. I think he is just an Unproven fighter, and while the excitement in me wants to see him take on the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Canelo Alvarez, and Miguel Cotto, wars are his strong suit and those wouldn’t really be true tests because wars are what he is accustomed to. The true boxing fan in me wants to see Gennady “God of War” Golovkin take on Andre “Son of God” Ward (27-0,14 KOs). Imagine that, “God of War vs. “Son Of God” that to me is the make or break, highlight of his career fight for Golovkin. Nowadays a lot of fighters get in there and knock guys out, but when they face boxers they can’t do a thing and end up being out boxed for twelve rounds and losing a decision. I feel as though Andre Ward would be the biggest test of Golovkin’s career and I think Andre Ward would neutralize Golovkin’s offense and win 8 out of 12 rounds and win a decision. It would be interesting to see how Golovkin handles a foe he isn’t used to fighting, Andre Ward is that foe. Golovkin has a bright future ahead of him, but in my opinion unless he faces and defeats a slick boxer like Andre Ward, he will remain Untried, Unproven, and Untested.
