Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana II: Don’t bite the hand that feeds you

MAYHEM - FIGHT NIGHT-Mayweather vs Maidana-4951(Photo credit: Stephanie Trapp/Mayweather Promotions) By Gerardo Granados: It was not clear for me if Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) did bite WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) on his left hand but it was evident that this was not the card of the year by far. Last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada the fight fan got to see another major boxing event, but was it worth it´s price?

Floyd Mayweather Jr controlled the fight and won by unanimous decision but there are boxing analysts who think he has slowed down a bit; maybe it’s true but to me it might have been Marcos Maidana´s awkward boxing style instead of his age the reason why he didn’t looked as dominant as when he fought Canelo Alvarez.

The official score cards 115-112 and 116-111 (twice) seemed too close to me, I scored the bout a shutout 119-108; clean & hard punching, defense, ring generalship and effective aggression goes to Money.

Chino failed to cut off the ring and his work rate considerably diminished from his last bout, maybe he came in too light, perhaps his corner failed to instruct him on how to cut off the ring and to prepare his big right, but for sure it will be really interesting to see Maidana against IBF Kell Brook or an Adrien Broner rematch.

With the exception of the main event and the nut cracker showdown between John Molina vs Humberto Soto, the rest of the boxing card was disappointing to say the less. Do the readers believe it is fair to pay so much to see such fights?

The Miguel Vazquez vs Mickey Bey fight was as boring as the scoring was incorrect, not many fight fans can argue otherwise. A friend of mine thinks that it is better that a belt is owned by a prize fighter who can please the crowd and bring good earnings.

Alfredo Angulo is a great guy but it is time for him to seriously consider retirement after his third defeat on hands of James De la Rosa who absolutely dominated Perro. I bet trainer Virgil Hunter must agree on this.

Leo Santa Cruz fought former sparring Manuel Roman in a horrible mismatch, period.
Was all this worth the price? I think Promoters and TV Networks are biting the hand that feeds them by offering low quality boxing cards and charging too much to fight fans.

There have always been disappointing cards. But, do the readers remember the cards that we used to get in the past years? How about the WBC light welter Julio Cesar Chavez Sr vs Meldrick Taylor II main event with IBF welter Tito Trinidad vs Yory Boy Campas, WBC super feather Jesse James Leija vs Gabriel Ruelas and WBA junior welter Juan Martin Coggi vs Frankie Randall on the undercard.

Do you recall the WBC light welter Julio Cesar Chavez Sr vs Frankie Randall main event with IBF welter Tito Trinidad vs Hector Camacho, WBC super welter Simon Brown vs Troy Walters on the undercard. But a card like the next one would have been charged at a plus hundred now a day: Julio Cesar Chavez vs Frankie Randall II on the main event and on the undercard Azumah Nelson vs Jesse James Leija, Gerald McClelland vs Julian Jackson, Ricardo Lopez vs Kermit Guardia, Simon Brown vs Terry Norris, Giovanni Parisi vs Richie Hess, Meldrick Taylor vs Chad Broussard and Calvin Grove vs Angel Aldama (The Rematches – May 7th, 1994 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas).

It is fair to charge an expensive fee for a quality card but some of the last haven’t showed good competitive fights to enjoy, even less to pay for. Fight fans around the world should start to put pressure on the boxing industry by stop buying or watching anything the Promoters and TV Networks put on the screen.

Do the readers think it is fair for Promoters and TV Networks to bite the hand that feeds them?
