Canelo says a rematch against Mayweather isn’t important to him

canelo06By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) says he wants to make history and become the face of boxing in the next 10 years to carry the sport, yet he says it’s not important for him to face Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) again to try and avenge his embarrassing loss to him from last September.

Canelo was easily beaten by Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2013, and it was thought that Canelo would start pushing for a rematch with him or at least show some kind of outward signs that he wanted to remove that blemish from his record. But it looks like that’s nothing Canelo is interested in.

When asked by RingTV.com if a rematch with Mayweather was something he wanted, Canelo said “It’s not important to me,” he said. “All his fights he doesn’t take a risk He fights 10 percent of every round and then uses his experience to survive. He’s not exciting.”

So is it just about who the most exciting fighter is and not who the best fighter is for Canelo? If it’s just about who the most exciting fighter is then you’ve got to consider Marcos Maidana as the top fighter at 147 and not Mayweather, even though he lost to Mayweather.

I think Canelo is getting things twisted. Boxing is a sport, and there is a winner and a loser in each fight. But with Canelo, it sounds like he’s saying that it doesn’t matter if you lose, if you win the event by making it exciting, then you’re the winner. I don’t think most boxing fans see it that way. They still see it as a sport and not something where you’re awarded and called the best even though you lost the fight.

I wonder how Julio Cesar Chavez Sr would feel about Canelo not being interested in a rematch with Mayweather. I would think that a prime Chavez would be looking to get a second fight against Mayweather if he lost a fight to him.
