The Alamodome is already booked as of now. The only thing the 24-year-old Canelo needs now is an opponent to face. Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22 KOs) is the one that’s been mentioned as the guy Golden Boy Promotions is interested in matching Canelo against. Clottey is about to turn 37, and his name recognition with younger fans is about zero now because he’s not been seen by boxing fans in a big U.S fight since 2010 when he was easily beaten by Manny Pacquiao.

It’s been 4 years since then, and Clottey disappeared completely from taking on the big names until recently when he defeated 39-year-old Anthony Mundine by a 12 round decision. Mundine isn’t a big name in the United States, and that fight wasn’t televised in the U.S.

If Canelo wants to take on a fighter that at least recognizable to fans in the U.S, he needs someone like Demetrius Andrade. That guy has been fighting regularly on cable recently and he’s a fighter that fans in the U.S know about.

With his fight taking place in San Antonio, Texas, you have to assume that James Kirkland is the guy they’re interested in for the fight. Kirkland lives in Texas, and a fight between him and Canelo would attract a lot of interest in the state.

It might be difficult for Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions to get Kirkland because he’s likely going to want to be paid well given the name he’s fighting. You’re not going to get Kirkland on the cheap for a fight like this.

I believe that Canelo is making a big mistake by choosing not to fight Erislandy Lara again to clear up the controversy from their fight last July. Canelo beat Lara by a 12 round split decision, but many boxing fans still believe that Canelo didn’t do enough to establish that he was the winner of the fight. Paulie Malignaggi from Showtime had Lara winning the fight. He said he’d be comfortable with a draw as well.
