Anthony Dirrell interested in Froch fight, but not in England

dirrell23134By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell says he’d be interested in fighting IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch if the money is right. Dirrell says that’s a fight that he could get motivated for because it would be a situation where the best is fighting the best. However, Dirrell says he wouldn’t fight Froch in the UK.

He’d have to come to the U.S to fight him because he’s still not happy about what happened to his older brother Andre Dirrell, who lost a controversial decision to Froch 5 years ago in Froch’s home city of Nottingham, UK in 2009.

Many boxing fans saw Andre Dirrell win a clear decision, and yet the judges gave Froch the victory. Froch never gave Dirrell a rematch even though his win was highly controversial.

Dirrell could be facing the UK’s George Groves if he defeats Christopher Rebrasse this Saturday night in their WBC super middleweight eliminator bout at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. Dirrell doesn’t want to fight a guy like Groves, who has been starched twice in a row by Froch. But Dirrell does want the Froch fight.

It would give Dirrell a chance to avenge his brother Andre’s defeat to Froch at the same time giving him an opportunity to prove that he’s better than him. Of course, the payday that he’d get for a Froch fight would obviously be a nice thing as well for Anthony.

“No, I’d never come to England, ever,” Anthony Dirrell said to IFL TV. “I seen he [Andre Dirrell] got a raw deal, everyone seen it. I think he [Andre] won, but that’s ancient history. He moved on from there. He’s back in the ring now and he’s coming. He wants Froch, but if it makes money for me then it makes sense. I want the money fight. Whatever makes money, that’s what I want.”

When asked if he’d be interested in fighting Froch, Anthony Dirrell said “Now that’s a fight if we can make it happen and if the monies right, of course. That’s what it’s about – the best fighting the best, and George Groves is not the best. He don’t deserve a shot at all.”

Froch hasn’t shown any desire to get in the ring with either of the Dirrell brothers, so I’m not sure that Dirrell is going to be able to get him to fight him. Froch looks like he’d heading towards retirement soon. He’s likely going to fight James DeGale next in a fight that will likely take place in early 2015.

After that, we’re probably looking at Froch fighting Mikkel Kessler again and maybe Groves for a third time, even if he gets knocked out by Dirrell or Rebrasse. I see Froch pretty much finishing his career on three guys – DeGale, Kessler and Groves – and at that point he’ll likely walk away rather than face the Dirrell brothers and possibly lose.
