dirrell445By Scott Gilfoid: #9 WBC Andre Dirrell (22-1, 15 KOs) will be fighting the capable Nick Brinson (16-2-2, 6 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of Sam Soliman vs. Jermain Taylor card on ESPN2 on October 8th at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, in Biloxi, Mississippi, USA.

This is a nice addition to the Soliman-Taylor fight card, because it’ll give boxing fans a chance to see a talent like Dirrell in action. Dirrell is coming off of an impressive 5th round stoppage win over Vladine Biosse on August 1st last month in Dirrell’s first fight back in action since being out of the ring for a year and a half.

Dirrell looked like he’d never been away at all in the Biosse fight. In fact, you can easily say that Dirrell fought better against Biosse than when he was in the Super Six tournament 4 years ago.

Dirrell is trying to restart his career. He’s fought several times since his victory over Arthur Abraham in 2010 in beating Darryl Cunningham, Michael Gbenga and Biosse. A win over Brinson would be a good victory to help keep pushing Dirrell up the rankings.

Dirrell says he wants a rematch with IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, who beat Dirrell by a controversial decision in Nottingham in 2009. A lot of boxing fans count that as a loss for Froch due to Dirrell dominating Froch for 9 of the 12 rounds, but it was a fight that took place in Froch’s home city, so Dirrell was kind of up against it in taking on Froch in that location.

Unfortunately the chances of Dirrell getting a rematch with Froch are probably zero at this point because Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn are very careful in the guys that they want to fight. They’re mentioning Dirrell or Andre Ward’s names as potential opponents. Heck, Froch doesn’t sound all that excited about fighting James DeGale either and that kind of tells you something.

Dirrell’s best bet to get a world title shot is to go after WBO champion Arthur Abraham or wait until the IBF strips Froch for failing to defend his title if he opts not to fight DeGale.
