Will Gennady Golovkin be able to force the so called Big Names to fight him?

golovkin111By Gerardo Granados: Sooner than later, the so called big names might not find where to hide and could run out of excuses to not to fight the WBA – IBO Middleweight Champion of the World Gennady Golovkin (W30(27)-L0-D0). Next October 18th GGG will defend his championship against Marco Antonio Rubio (W59(51)-L6-D1) who is a quality middleweight contender that possesses the experience and hunger to compete against any belt holder. The Rubio vs Golovkin fight is no mismatch and you can bet it will be more competitive than the Manny Pacquiao vs Chris Algieri illusion.

It is a shame that Erik Morales doesn’t hold a belt at the middleweight division. Do the reader recalls who gave Danny Garcia his first shot at the title? After come back from an unofficial retirement, Terrible won a couple of fights and then challenged a young lion named Lucas Matthysse but the bout was cancelled due Lucas viral illness one week prior to their fight.

Instead of seeking for an easy prey as a replacement Morales once again choose another dangerous young lion named Marcos Maidana; I might be one of the few boxing analyst who gave Morales a good chance to defeat Chino and Terrible didn’t let me down when he lost a very close and competitive fight on the official score cards. After Erik won the vacant WBC light welter title against a ranked Pablo Cesar Cano; instead to decide to cherry pick a tailor made opponent in order to look good Morales decided to defend his belt against yet another young division talent named Danny Garcia.

What will happen after Golovkin finishes off all top contenders in the middleweight division? Because he will clean up the division top contenders if he keeps on knocking out fighters each three months or so. In the last 20 months he will have fought 6 times and he is scheduled to fight again in less than 3 months after his last title defense.

At this pace Gennady could have defeated most of the top contenders by next year’s fall. But will then the so called big names be forced to fight him when there will be nothing left than Golovkin leftovers so they can pick to fight? It would not be a surprise that even then GGG would still be avoided.

One way to measure the greatness of a fighter is to value his will to risk losing a fight against a bigger, younger or more skilled opponent. The reader must remember several examples of great fighters from the past and some exclusive group in the present but who knows if in the near future prize fighters will value more their undefeated record than the pride to challenge a bigger lion in order to defeat him.

Its true Pro Boxing is a business, but just as all kind of businesses the buyers always look for quality and are willing to pay high prices when they finally find what will please them. You can fool the eyes of a casual fan with heinous mismatches but I can guarantee you that it won’t last forever, because once fight fans realize that they were conned then they will stop believing the hype and start appreciating a lion for what is worth.

A friend of mine asked me why haven’t GGG fought the Big Names yet, but I couldn’t offer him a simple answer, maybe it’s because the promotional cold wars, contractual issues, the greedy promoters, promoters suing boxers and vice versa, the Big Names cherry picking, the horrible mismatches televised as a main event or even worst for the lack of interest to prove to be the best at your weight division.

Do the readers believe Golovkin will be able to force the so called Big Names to fight him?
