Wilder says he’ll be more technical against Gavern

Deontay Wilder and Jason Gavern(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Rather than going out and bludgeoning his opponent 37-year-old Jason Gavern with some tremendous right hands in the 1st round for a quick knockout, #1 WBC Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KOs) says he plans on showing more of his technique by being technical in the fight before he eventually obliterates Gavern early in the fight on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Deontay wants to work on some things to get himself ready for his title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne later this year. Deontay has the right guy for him to work on his technical skills in Gavern, because he’s not much a threat to him and he can experiment with this like uppercuts and left hooks.

“We will see more technique. I will be more technical and get him out. You’ll see the same thing, a knockout,” Deontay said to Fightnews.com.

Deontay’s right hand is so powerful that he really doesn’t need much more than that for him to get victories.

When Deontay nails his opponents with his right, he puts them to sleep for the night. With the kind of power that Deontay has, he hasn’t had to work on different things because he doesn’t need to do much. But once he gets in the ring with Stiverne, Deontay might need to use other tools like his left hooks, uppercuts and good defensive skills for him to get past this test to take his WBC strap.

Gavern shouldn’t put up too much resistance on Saturday before Deontay takes him out with a big shots. Gavern wlil definitely be trying his best in the fight, but his best likely won’t be nearly good enough for him to win.

One tool that Deontay needs to work on a lot is his jab. He doesn’t use it very much in his fights, and he needs to develop that weapon so that he can have it in his arsenal against the 5’11” Stiverne. Deontay’s job would be much easier if he were to focus on just using his jab because a guy like Stiverne couldn’t get near him.
