Trout wants Canelo, Cotto and Lara after one more tune-up fight

trout33By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA 154 pound champion Austin Trout (27-2, 14 KOs) says he wants one more tune-up fight to get the rust out before he goes after the top tier fighters. Trout, 28, specifically wants rematches with Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara.

Trout beat Cotto in 2012, but then lost to both Canelo and Lara by 12 round decisions. Trout fought well enough to deserve a win in the Canelo fight, but he was up against it by facing a popular fighter like Canelo in Texas. It was a situation where Trout needed to really pound Canelo if he had wanted to get a win.

Last night, Trout defeated #15 WBA Daniel Dawson (40-4-1, 21 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision by the scores of 97-97, 97-97, and 97-97 at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. The fight was a mismatch other than the 3rd round in which Trout was knocked down twice by right hands. Trout said later that he had let his concentration slip and that’s why he got nailed.

“It’s obvious I’ve got to shake some more rust off,” Trout said to Hustleboss.com and other media. “I’d say another mid-tier fight to make sure I’m top tier and then go after the top guys. In a perfect world I’d like to get Cotto, Alvarez and Lara again. I’m very rematch-minded, very title-minded and this is the start back.”

Trout went on to say that he would like to get back in the ring within the next 2 weeks to fight again. He was out of the ring 9 months after his loss to Lara last December. Trout had been out of the ring 9 months when he fought Lara as well. He doesn’t want to keep doing that because he feels it’s causing him to be rusty.

As far as Trout facing Canelo and Cotto again, it’s very, very unlikely that either of those two fighters will ever face Trout again unless he does something special like beats Lara and then defeats another one of the junior middleweight champions like Demetrius Andrade.

The way that Trout looked last night against Dawson, I don’t think he’ll do well against Lara in a rematch, and I believe Andrade would beat him as well.
