Rubio plans on taking advantage of Golovkin’s poor defense

golovkin2By Dan Ambrose: The hard hitting WBC interim middleweight champion Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) plans on going after WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) in their proposed fight on October 18th and knocking him out.

The Rubio-Golovkin fight isn’t a done deal as of yet, but it’s expected to be signed shortly. They’re looking at putting in possibly at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Rubio says he sees a lot of flaws in Golovkin’s defense that he wants to take advantage of. He feels that the only reason Golovkin’s past opponents didn’t get to him was because they didn’t have the power and lacked the nerve. They were scared looking and fought defensively, and this enabled Golovkin to be the one coming forward looking to land his shots. Rubio says he’s going to reverse that trend by going after Golovkin.

“He opens up a lot. He does get hit. A lot of the guys he’s fought in the past were scared of him,” Rubio said to esnewsreporting. “They were never able to take advantage of his weaknesses. I’m not going to be scared. I’m going to try and take advantage of this, and I feel like I’m the strongest person he will have ever fought. I’ll definitely be looking to knock him out,” Rubio said.

I’m not sure if you can call Rubio the strongest guy that Golovkin has ever fought, because he’s been in there with Gabriel Rosado and Curtis Stevens. Both of those guys have major power. If Rubio is stronger than them, then it’s not by a whole lot. Stevens and Rosado are good punchers and Rubio doesn’t look any more powerful than them. He mainly looks slower than them in terms of hand speed.

Golovkin has the perfect opponent for him to shine against in facing Rubio. If Rubio is serious about wanting to come after him in their fight on October 18th then we could see an explosive fight filled with fireworks. By standing in the pocket against Golovkin, Rubio is going to be able to test his power on Golovkin’s chin. Rubio will likely be going out on his shield in this fight rather than running and getting taken out anyway like we saw with Daniel Geale recently.
