Mayweather-Maidana 30-day weights

By Chris Williams: With less than 30 days to go before the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Marcos Maidana, both fighters were on target with the regulation weight for their fight on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather weighed 150 pounds. Maidana weighed in at 158.

The weights that they’re currently at doesn’t mean they’ll stay there by fight time. We frequently see fighters weighing in one month ahead at a considerably lower weight than the weight they come into fight with.

This means that Maidana might end up over 160 pounds again like the last time he fought Mayweather last May. Maidana came into the fight as a super middleweight at 165 compared to the 150 pound Mayweather. Maidana was able to use his 15 pound weight advantage in the early part of the fight when he was able to land some heavy blows to the head and body of Mayweather.

The extra weight that Maidana carried ended up hurting him badly in the 2nd half of the fight when he faded and the lighter Mayweather was able to take the fight to Maidana and win. Based on Maidana’s current weight of 158, we’re going to see the same pattern in the rematch with Maidana having his moments in the early part of the fight, and then wearing down badly by the 6th round.

Maidana and his trainer Robert Garcia have said repeatedly that the plan is for Maidana to come in below 160 in the 154 pound region, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. It might have been just talk to try and throw Mayweather off, or it could that the weight that Maidana put on after his loss to Mayweather has proven to be difficult to take off.

During the recent 5-city press tour, Maidana looked to be close to 180 pounds. Taking off that kind of weight to get near the 147 pound weight limit is obviously going to be a problem for him, and that’s probably why he’s still at 158. I doubt that he’ll be able to go any lower than that without coming into the fight weight drained.
