By Allan Fox: On Tuesday, ESPN reported that several fights have been added to the undercard of the September 13th Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana 2 fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fights are as follows: Lightweights Miguel Vazquez vs. Mickey Bey, junior middleweights Alfredo Angulo vs. James De La Rosa and WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz vs. TBA.

Santa Cruz is an excellent fighter and an obvious choice for the co-feature if they can find a good opponent for him. He’s clearly the most talented fighter on the undercard and seems to have the biggest fan base as well. If they could find someone good for him to fight, he’ll be a great addition to the card.

It’s unclear in what order these undercard fights will be in. Bey-Vazquez isn’t the ideal fight for a co-feature bout. Bey is a good fighter, but he’s more of a fringe contender at this point of his career. #7 WBA, #13 IBF Bey was an obvious choice for the card because he fights for Mayweather Promotions.

It’s curious that Bey will be fighting for a world title against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez though because Bey was recently knocked out by John Molina last year. Bey has since won his last two fights against Carlos Cardenas and Alan Herrera.

Alfredo Angulo is coming off of back to back knockout losses to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara. He did not look good in his last fight in getting stopped in the 10th round by Canelo last June. Angulo looked very, very slow and weak in that fight, and nothing like the fighter he had once been.

There was talk that Angulo would move up in weight to middleweight for his next fight, but that doesn’t appear to be happening here. His opponent James De La Rosa has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights, but he’s still a tough fighter. It wouldn’t be surprising if Angulo loses to him as well. If that happens, Angulo might want to think about retiring. If he can’t beat a guy like De La Rosa, then it’s all over for him.

The Bey-Vazquez fight would be a decent beginning fight of the televised PPV portion of the Mayweather-Maidana 2 undercard, but it’s clearly not co-feature material. The same goes with Angulo vs. De La Rosa. That’s a fight that would be a good starter bout of the card, but it isn’t big enough to be anywhere near the co-feature level.

At this point it’s hard to see the point in Angulo on the televised portion of the card at all, period. You don’t normally see fighters coming off of back to back KO losses on Mayweather’s cards.
