floyd1By Chris Williams: The Nevada State Athletic Commission have selected the judges and referee for the September 13th rematch between WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) and Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather won’t have Tony Weeks as the referee for the rematch. The Commission selected Kenny Bayless as the referee, and John McKay, Dave Moretti and Guido Cavalleri as the three judges.

Tony Weeks worked the previous Mayweather-Maidana fight, and he chose not to take points away from Maidana for the roughhouse tactics he used in the fight. Weeks did give Maidana a warning for throwing a lot blow early in the fight, but the fight had a lot more fouling than just that one low blow. It was pretty much constant.

Mayweather wasn’t happy after the fight because he thought Weeks should addressed the fouling that Maidana had done.

The bad news for Mayweather is that Bayless isn’t a referee known for taking off a lot of points. He’s not likely going to step in and disqualify Maidana if he chooses to hammer Mayweather with rabbit punches or low blows all night. He’ll give some warnings, and I’d be very surprised if he goes beyond that to take points off for the fouling by Maidana.

Mayweather’s best way of avoiding being fouled is to take responsibility for things he can do and not count on Bayless to do his job and take points off or disqualify if things get out of hands. If Mayweather stays on the move, hits and doesn’t stand in one place for too long of a time, he should be able to limit the amount of roughhouse tactics that Maidana will be using against him.

Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia gave a signal for what’s to be expected in the rematch on September 13th when he said during the press tour that Maidana is going to make it even rougher for Mayweather in the second fight.
