By Dan Ambrose: Former two-time world title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) said last night that he’ll be facing WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 37 KOs) on October 18th.

The fight hasn’t been confirmed yet by Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler at K2 Promotions, but it does seem like a bout that would make sense for Golovkin given that he’s fighting in Los Angeles for his October fight.

Having Rubio as an opponent will help sell tickets and attract interest in the fight. It’ll also give Golovkin the opportunity to show off his body punching skills, because Rubio has heavy hands and he likes to stand and trade with his opponents.

Rubio said “Since Miguel Cotto didn’t want to fight me, we’re fighting GGGboxing [Golovkin] October 18. I never back down from anyone. The battle is coming!”

This is a reasonably good fight for Golovkin. I rate it as far better than his last mismatch against the light hitting Daniel Geale, because Rubio can punch and he’s got a great chin. However, let’s not it twisted. Rubio stands no chance whatsoever against Golovkin. He’s just another guy that Golovkin is going to destroy within 5-6 rounds.

Rubio was dominated by former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in their fight in 2012 in losing a 12 round decision. Chavez Jr was way too big for Rubio in that fight and it turned out to be 12 rounds of Chavez Jr nailing Rubio to the head and body in close. Rubio took a lot of punishment but he remained standing.

In 2009, Rubio as blown out in 9 rounds by former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. Rubio didn’t have the ability to compete with the much stronger Pavlik in that fight, and he turned into a punching bag for Pavlik until the fight was halted.

Rubio turned his career around with a big win over Canadian slugger David Lemieux in 2011 in stopping him in the 7th round. Lemieux came into the fight as the favorite, but he ran out of gas in the 6th after dominating the first five rounds.

In Rubio’s last three fights, he’s beaten Domenico Spada, Dionisio Miranda and Marcus Upshaw.
Golovkin wants to take on the likes of Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but neither of them has shown interest in fighting him.
