Maidana will need to be perfect to beat Mayweather

maidana5By Allan Fox: Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) made a number of critical mistakes in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) last May in losing to him by a 12 round majority decision in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the mistakes Maidana made was coming into the fight too heavy in weighing 165 against the lighter and more agile 150 pound Mayweather.

Maidana’s extra size hurt him when he gassed after 6 rounds. Maidana’s wasn’t up to par, and it cost him big time. He also hurt himself by throwing too many head shots in the fight. Many of the shots that Maidana threw to the head of Mayweather missed wide of the mark, and it was a waste of energy for Maidana to have thrown so many punches that had little chance of landing.

In hindsight, Maidana could have increased his punch accuracy by landing to the body a lot more and waiting until the second half of the fight to start looking for head shots when Mayweather was worn out from the body shots.

Maidana is going to need to fight the perfect fight this time if he wants to beat Mayweather in their rematch on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. If Maidana makes a mistake in any one area of his game, Mayweather is going to likely take advantage of the mistake by connecting cleanly and using that hole in his game to continually nail him with shots.

This means that if Maidana is only trained well enough to fight 5-6 rounds, Mayweather is going to take advantage of that by nailing him with shots in the second half of the fight to in a decision. If Maidana only throws head shots, then Mayweather is going to make him miss by moving his head.

Maidana has a good trainer in Robert Garcia who should have sat down and analyzed the mistakes that Maidana made against Mayweather last time they fought and come up with some good ideas to make sure that those mistakes aren’t repeated on September 13th.
